SplashTag’s 2016 NBA Mock Draft

Before I get into the NBA mock draft, the podcast is now up for review by iTunes, but we have it up and ready to go on SoundCloud (https://soundcloud.com/user-145034238/episode-1-nba-talk-with-sid). When it’s up on iTunes, please subscribe! Now, onto the NBA draft.

Predicting all 60 picks and doing my research was a real grind.

Giving commentary on all 60 would be as well, so instead I’ll go over a holistic view of how I made this mock draft, then just use this as a fun way of seeing how many picks I can correctly predict (I haven’t done this before).

So first, I assumed that all the teams will keep their picks (i.e. no trade). I did have a super cool fake trade for Kevin Love that I’ll show, but I don’t think it’s happening. Kevin Love Carmelo Trade

The trade itself works, and if you throw in the Celtics 3rd overall pick to go to the Sixers, it makes sense- except maybe Tristan leaving (it makes sense from a salary/basketball standpoint but LeBron is homies with Tristan Thompson). Kevin Love gets a fresh start, Okafor goes to a team that wants him, New York can get rid of Melo’s contract, Melo gets to play for a contender, the Sixers get to draft Kris Dunn. But, the Cavs JUST won the NBA title yesterday and it’d be a pretty quick turnaround for personnel to orchestrate this trade. I think this fake trade it awesome, but I don’t think it’s happening. So, here’s a mock draft where no team trades any players. I looked at the biggest needs for each team and then I thought, since this years college player crop and the NBA draft is considered weaker and less predictable (after all, people in 20-40 range have very volatile stock and all could be very good rotational players), I thought hey why not be bold and make bold picks that are need or situation-based. So, I have a very shocking 3rd overall pick that I just felt could be a huge boom-or-bust but worthy risk. So, here goes, I think I’ll probably get 11/60 correct.

Oh and by the way, this is like a third iteration. I had one, then I revised it, then today I learned that apparently the Grizzlies have made a promise to Malachi Richardson to take him at 17 (I had him at 26 before so there was a ripple effect).
